G6PD (Glucose.6.Phosphate Dehydrogenase) is a hereditary enzyme found in the red blood cells. Deficiency of this enzyme can damage the red cells when exposed to infection, certain drugs or food, resulting in jaundice especially during the first 3 weeks of life. If the jaundice is severe, it can result in brain damage.
All newborns are routinely screened for this enzyme deficiency, which occurs in 28% of our population.
G6PD deficiency being hereditary and thus lifelong, it is important to avoid certain drugs or foods which can trigger a reaction.
